Horizontal Directional Drilling

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) or Trenchless Construction has enabled pipelines and conduits to be installed beneath highways and river systems around the world that would otherwise prove to be too expensive, difficult or environmentally destructive. Trenchless construction is a proven and recognized system that is environmentally friendly and imposes minimal disruption to the community and surrounding infrastructure. The HDD construction method can be used to install pipelines beneath areas where conventional open trench or other construction techniques may cause undesirable surface disturbance. The HDD method tunnels beneath surface obstacles and then pulls the pipeline back through the underground tunnel, leaving the surface undisturbed. The tunnels are typically drilled to depths ranging from 25 to 100 feet below surface obstacles, depending upon the location, pipe characteristics, and subsurface conditions.

Our experienced engineers and operators are capable of providing services for Horizontal Directional Drilling for River Crossing, Railway Crossing, Road Crossing, Canal Crossing etc. We have laid approximately 10,000 kms. of Telecom Ducts/OFC cable through trenchless method for leading Telecom Operators of the country like Bharti, BSNL, Idea, Reliance, VSNL, Vodafone, Aircel etc.


The HDD installation involves five main steps:

  • Pre-Site Planning:

    Extensive pre-site planning is required to determine if the HDD method is technically and geologically feasible. A topographic survey is performed along the proposed drill site to ensure adequate surface area is available to conduct the drilling process. In addition, a geotechnical investigation is conducted at each drill site to determine the subsurface conditions. Using the data from the geotechnical investigation and topographic survey, a specific drill path is determined.
  • Drilling the Pilot Hole:

    Once the entry location, exit location and trajectory have been determined, the next step is the drilling of a pilot hole. The drill rig is set up at the entry location.When the drill rig is in place, drilling of a pilot hole begins. At all stages along the drilling path, the operator receives information regarding the position, depth, and orientation of the drilling tool, allowing navigation of the drill head along the designed drill path to the exit point.
  • Hole Opening Process:

    Upon completion of the pilot hole, the hole opening or reaming process begins. This process consists of progressively enlarging the pilot hole to a diameter that will allow successful pullback of the prefabricated pipe string.
  • Pipe String Pullback:

    A pipe string consists of short sections (approximately 40 feet) of steel pipe which are welded together to form a continuous string of pipe for insertion into the drilled hole. The pipe string is slightly longer than the length of the drilled hole. The pipe string is coated with a layer of corrosion and abrasion resistant protective coatings and hydrostatically pressure tested to insure its integrity. The pipe string is then placed on rollers and cradles to assist with movement during pullback. Next, the pipe string is pulled over the rollers and down into the drilled hole. The pullback continues until the entire length of the pipe string has been pulled into the drilled hole.
  • Environmental and Safety Measures:

    One inspector is assigned full-time to each of the HDD sites and will assist in monitoring the progress of the drill. Excess drilling fluids (non toxic bentonite clay and water) and cuttings produced by the HDDs will be disposed of at an approved disposal site. Water, to mix the drilling fluids and complete the pipe string hydrotests, will be brought in from off site and stored in tanks at the entry and exit locations.

Operations & Maintainence

We at Operation & Maintenance Business Unit endeavour to provide flexible, integrated, dependable, quality and responsive solutions for the Operation & Maintenance requirements in the telecom industry. Our customer's commitment is our commitment. Not only are the services provided by us are cost effective but also in line with the customer expectations and satisfaction level, hence we are able to get renewal and extension of the projects of O&M received by us. The teams provided by us are project specific and are well trained with the specific skills required for Operation & Maintenance in the telecom industry.

The maintenance of OFC routes on regular basis i.e., 24*7 maintenance service is to be provided and therefore in the event of any emergencies, we will crew to attend to such work. Scope of work shall include Routine OFC Maintenance, Breakdown OFC Maintenance The team Consists of Team Leader, Supervisor, splicer, Assistant Splicer, Technician, Patroller, Helper.(e.g., For about 250 kms, we had assigned 1 Technician, 1 Splicer, 1 Assistant Splicer, 3 Patrollers) Patrolling: Mode of transport of patrollers shall be customer specific.(e.g., Railtel- Window patrollers by train, by foot, VSNL -By road ) Tools & Equipments: Our team will be equipped with the following tolls & equipments- Splicing Machine, OTDR Meter, Road Meter, Power Meter, Earth Tester, Duct Cutter, Mobile phone, Optical Fiber Tool Kit (Sheet cutter, Striper, Cleaver, Ceramic scissors, Loose Tube cutter, Live Fiber Detector, Ceramic Blade, Fiber Scope etc.,), Multi Meter and Gen Set.

    Maintaining OFC Network of VSNL Kolkata since 2005 with an average Network Uptime of 99.6% per month. Presently maintaining 450 Kms OFC Network.
  • Tata Teleservices Limited(TTSL),Kolkata

    Maintaining OFC Network of TTSL Kolkata. Presently maintaining Approx 950 Kms OFC Network with 4 (Four) Teams.
  • Vodafone Essar East Ltd.

In places were horizontal directional trenching is not possible due to various circumstances, manual trenching is done due to which all the optical fiber cables are laid even in the remotest of places.
